The Government of Tamil Nadu by an Act of State Legislature [Act No.43 of 1997] established the Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in learning, teaching and research in the field of law. His Excellency Shri. K.R. Narayanan, then President of India inaugurated it on September 20, 1997 in the presence of Dr.Kalaignar Karunanidhi, then Chief Minister of Tamilnadu and the University started from October 3, 1997 onwards.
The University was named after the Architect of the Indian Constitution Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The University is recognized by the Bar Council of India ( BCI ) and University Grants Commission ( UGC ) ( Sec. 2f and 12b of the UGC Act. ). The University is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities ( AIU ), Association of Common Wealth Universities, U.K. and Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi. This University is functioning as Nodal Agency of the Government to uplift the legal education in the State of Tamil Nadu.The University has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with B++ grade in September 2022.
The University is the first full-fledged sui generis affiliating Law University in the country; it is unique among all the Law Universities in the Country. It offers Legal Education through this University and its affiliated colleges in the State and the University is the first of its kind not only in the country but also in South Asia. The University offers legal education at its campus as well as through fifteen affiliated government law colleges in the state of Tamil Nadu located at Chennai, Madurai,Trichy,Coimbatore,Tirunelveli,PattaraiPerambudur,Pudupakkam,Chengalpattu,Villupuram,Dharmapuri,Ramanathapuram,Vellore, Theni, Namakkal, Salem and Karaikudi. In addition to the Government Law Colleges, University offers legal education through nine private law colleges located in the different parts of Tamil Nadu.
The School of Excellence in Law was established by the University in the year 2002 at its campus has been modeled on the lines of other National Law Schools in the country and offers three year as well as five year integrated undergraduate courses in Law. The University has a Postgraduate and Research Centre, which offers Master of Law Degree Courses in eleven different specializations, doctoral programme as well as organizing research in diverse areas of Law.
Multidisciplinary approach to the study of law is gradually emerging as the need of the hour. TNDALU has adequate infrastructural facilities to provide the perfect ambience for interdisciplinary studies in law, in its true sense. University not only imbibed with multidisciplinary approach to the legal studies and research but it is making genuine efforts to disseminate such approach to both the privileged and underprivileged learners and researchers of law and jurisprudence. It is striving towards imparting quality legal education to the students including the students who are from poor, oppressed, downtrodden and backward communities of the society. The mission of the University is to equip the students with critical, analytical and applied skills and also to make both transactional and litigating lawyers. The School of Excellence in Law of TNDALU has been following the interdisciplinary approach in teaching, which is supported by its domain-expert faculty, state- of-the art infrastructure, international quality teaching pedagogies, special lectures by legal experts, and excellent nurturing environment for learning and thinking.
The University strongly promotes innovation led research culture supporting the entire student community to publish research papers in SCOPUS/ Web of Science indexed Journals and UGC Care Journals. A strong Academia Industry Interface has been developed for training and placement of students. TNDALU has collaborated with AIR Law Academy and Research Centre (ALARC) Nagpur, Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation (GIFT) Thiruvananthapuram, Commissionerate of Municipal Administration (CMA) Government of Tamil Nadu, Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) Mumbai, Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU) Aurangabad, Maharashtra National Law University (NLU) Mumbai, Kovise Foundation Conflict Resolution International (KFCRI),Chennai, MGR Janaki College of Arts and Science, Chennai, Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) New Delhi as knowledge partners for offering industry and research oriented courses in the curriculum to ensure high quality research and placement. Future Direction of the University Collaboration with top International and Indian Universities shall be further strengthened to enrich the experience of students and faculty. An ecosystem for International students will be established in the University to attract them to explore India as destination for enriched professional education supplemented with Indian culture, ethos and values.
The Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University being a State University established for the enhancement of legal education in the State of Tamil Nadu ensuring to provide legal education at world class standard. The institution upholds promotion of quality research for the benefit of the larger society. Legal Education combined with social equity cutting across the regional, linquistic barriers is delivered to the students, which in turn adds value to the development of the nation. Being a Law Varsity, the values upheld by the Constitution of India is inculcated in the curriculum and overall learning process of the students. The faculty of the varsity ensures inculcation of Professional Ethics among the students. Equality in terms of race, gender and religion is ensured in the day to day functioning of the University through various bodies established within the institution. In addition to these values, the institution produces potential law bearing citizens who are capable of adding values in the existing legal system of the country.
