About TNDALU

Government of Tamil Nadu by an Act of State Legislature [Act No.43 of 1997] established the Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in learning, teaching and research in the field of law. His Excellency Shri. K.R. Narayanan, former President of India inaugurated it on September 20, 1997, and the University started from October 3, 1997 onwards.

The University was named after the architect of the Indian Constitution Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The University is recognized by the Bar Council of India ( BCI ) and University Grants Commission ( UGC ) ( Sec. 2f and 12b of the UGC Act. ). The University is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities ( AIU ), Association of Common Wealth Universities, U.K. and Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi. This University is functioning as nodal agency to uplift the legal education in the State of Tamil Nadu.

The University is the first full-fledged sui generis Law University in the country; it is unique among all the Law Universities in the Country. The University is the first full-fledged Law University that offers Legal Education only through this University and its affiliated colleges in the State and the University is the first of its kind not only in the country but also in South Asia. The University offers legal education at its campus as well as through sixteen affiliated colleges in the state of Tamil Nadu located at Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Chengalpattu, Vellore and Salem.

The School of Excellence in Law established by the University at its campus since 2002 has been modeled on the lines of other National Law Schools in the country and offers three year as well as five year integrated undergraduate courses in Law. The University has a Postgraduate and Research Centre, which offers Master of Law Degree Courses in eleven different specializations, doctoral programme as well as organizing research in diverse areas of law. Apart from these, there is also a Distance Education Unit as well as a few evening college programmes for various postgraduate diploma courses.



Genesis

Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu by an Act of State Legislature. It was inaugurated by His Excellency Thiru K.R. Narayanan, President of India on September 20th 1997. The University started functioning from 03.10.1997



Objectives

The Objectives of the University as specified in the Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University Act 1996 ( No.43 of 1997 ) are as follows.

Policies of the University

  • In consonance with the objectives listed out in the Act, the University has drawn up the following broad policie
  • The Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University aims towards advancement of legal education and promotion of knowledge of law in general. The University will strive to improve the communal harmony and achieve the goal of egalitarian society through legal literacy programmes.
  • The Law University will strive to promote the skills of advocacy among the law students and research scholars so as to serve the society with a sense of responsibility while providing legal services, making legislation and suggesting law reforms.
  • The Law University will organize “Moot Court” Competition for the students of various Law Colleges in Tamil Nadu; such competition will be conducted at the national level also.
  • The Law University will organize suitable programmes to impart basic legal knowledge for those living in the remote and rural areas.
  • The Law University will hold examinations and confer degree, titles, diplomas and other academic distinctions on persons who shall have pursued an approved course of study in the University, University College or any college affiliated or deemed to be affiliated to the University.
  • Teaching and training in various branches offered for specialization in Law will be improved in terms of course content, methodology of teaching/training, etc.
  • A separate Gender Justice Centre will be established. It will concentrated on finding solution to the legal problems of women; this will function as a Counselling Centre to guide women to get equality in treatment on par with men.
  • The Law University through its programmes will work towards achieving social progress, national, equal justice, equality and fraternity.
  • The Law University will function as a coordinator center for all the institution dealing with law ( Government, Judiciary and its administrative wing, Police & Legislature ) to realize their social responsibility.
